Multimedia Studio on a DVD


This list is not complete and these are only the main software contained in the ArtistX DVD. In the /user/bin directory there are more than 5000 software. Here are presented the ones with a Graphical User Interface that can be used easily by newcomers to the GNU/Linux world, but there are many command line tools (for example FFMPEG) which may have a GUI or not, but can be extremely useful for multimedia production.
  • Free 3D Engine and Development Software

Meshlabs - MeshLab is an open source, portable, and extensible system for the processing and editing of unstructured 3D triangular meshes.
The system is aimed to help the processing of the typical not-so-small unstructured models arising in 3D scanning, providing a set of tools for editing, cleaning, healing, inspecting, rendering and converting this kind of meshes.


  • Free 3D Modelling and Animation Software

Art of Illusion - Art of Illusion is a free, open source 3D modelling and rendering studio. Many of its capabilities rival those found in commercial programs. Highlights include subdivision surface based modelling tools, skeleton based animation, and a graphical language for designing procedural textures and materials.


Ayam - Ayam is a full featured NURBS/CSG modelling environment for the RenderMan interface.


Blender – Blender is the most advanced 3D software in the world and by far the most professional free software.


Equinox 3D - The 3D modeler with the fastest, fully integrated ray-tracer. Because “rasterization is so 20th century(TM)”


K3d - K-3D is free-as-in-freedom 3D modeling and animation software. It combines flexible plugins with a visualization pipeline architecture, making K-3D a versatile and powerful tool for artists.


Make Human - Makehuman is a free, open source software designed for the rapid prototyping of photorealistic human (and humanoid) characters. It is developed by a community of programmers, artists, academics and enthusiasts interested in 3D computer models of human beings.


Moonlight3D - Moonlight|3D strives to become a free modern, flexible, feature-rich and extensible modelling and animation tool. Our goal is to provide a tool that is capable of turning even the most advanced and challenging projects of artists and technical artists into reality.


Sculptris - Sculptris is an elegant, powerful and yet easy to use 3D sculpting software, allowing the artist in you to simply focus on creating amazing 3D artwork. Gone are the technical and often tedious constraints typically associated with digital art.


Wings3D - Wings 3D is an advanced subdivision modeler that is both powerful and easy to use.


SweetHome3DSweet Home 3D is a free interior design application that helps you draw the plan of your house, arrange furniture on it and visit the results in 3D.


Y.A.P.R.M - Y.A.P.R.M. is a free-as-in-freedom modeller to graphicaly design 3d scenes and generate POV-Ray-files for them. Appart from the basic POV-Ray objects which can be used in CSG operations it supports spline based objects. Furthermore a vast amount of 3d-files can be imported and used with Y.A.P.R.M.


  • Free Audio DJ Software

Beatport SYNC - With Beatport SYNC, users are able to play, manage, and mix music.


Freecycle - Freecycle is a beat slicer running on GNU/Linux platform using the QT toolkit, providing amplitude domain and frequency domain beat matching / zero crossing algorithms. It exports sliced audio chunks and generates a MIDI file which can be used to play the sliced loop, or you can jam with it as soon as you’ve made slices using a midi keyboard or sequencer.


Freewheling - Freewheeling allows us to build repetitive grooves by sampling and directing loops from within spirited improvisation.


Mixxx - Mixxx allows you to perform live DJ mixes with your digital music collection. It helps you rock the party with MIDI controllers, vinyl turntables, or even just your keyboard. Mixxx is used by professional DJs and bedroom DJs alike. It is designed by an international team of volunteer DJs who want to bring the joy of DJing to everyone.


QSampler - LinuxSampler is a work in progress. The goal is to produce a free, open source pure software audio sampler with professional grade features, comparable to both hardware and commercial Windows/Mac software samplers.


Smasher - Cross-platform audio loop slicer designed to create sliced loops from WAV, MP3, FLAC or AIFF files in seconds without a sequencer. Effects include filter sweeps, phasing, flanging, delay, and distortion.


Tactile 12000 - The Tactile12000 is a 3-D, interactive simulation of a DJ setup – two turntables and a mixer. You can crossfade, backspin, and speed up and slow down music, including full-length WAVE and MP3 songs, on your computer.


TerminatorX - terminatorX is a realtime audio synthesizer that allows you to “scratch” on digitally sampled audio data (*.wav, *.au, *.ogg, *.mp3, etc.) the way hiphop-DJs scratch on vinyl records. It features multiple turntables, realtime effects (buit-in as well as LADSPA plugin effects), a sequencer and MIDI interface – all accessible through an easy-to-use gtk+ GUI.


  • Free Audio Synth Software

amSynth - amsynth is a software synth that provides a classic subtractive synthesizer topology, with dual oscillators with classic waveforms – sine , saw , square , noise, 24 dBoct low-pass resonant filter, Independent ADSR envelopes for filter and amplitude,LFO which can module the oscillators, filter, and amplitude, Distortion effect and Reverb.


Freebirth - Freebirth is a free software bass synthesizer / step sequencer / sample player for the linux operating system.


Horgand - horgand is a softsynth, really simple and easy to use, specially designed to produce organ sounds is also capable to generate other sound types like  Electric Pianos ( Rhodes , Wurlitzer , DX E.Piano ) , Jazz Guitar ,  Strings ,  Brass , Fretless Bass, Accordion etc. using low CPU resources.


Hydrogen - Hydrogen is an advanced drum machine for GNU/Linux. It’s main goal is to bring professional yet simple and intuitive pattern-based drum programming.


Ingen - Ingen (formerly Om) is a modular audio processing system for GNU/Linux audio systems using the Jack audio server and LV2 or LADSPA plugins.


Mx44 - The Mx44 is a polyphonic multichannel midi realtime software synthesizer.


Psychosynth - The Psychosynth project aims to create an interactive modular soft-synth inspired by the ideas of the Reactable


Qsynth - Qsynth is a fluidsynth GUI front-end application written in C++ around the Qt4 toolkit using Qt Designer. Eventually it may evolve into a softsynth management application allowing the user to control and manage a variety of command line softsynth but for the moment it wraps the excellent FluidSynth.


Rakarrack - Rakarrack is a richly featured multi-effects processor emulating a guitar effects pedalboard.  Effects include compressor, expander, noise gate, graphic equalizer, parametric equalizer, exciter, shuffle, convolotron, valve, flanger, dual flange, chorus, musicaldelay, arpie, echo with reverse playback, musical delay, reverb, digital phaser, analogic phaser, synthfilter, varyband, ring, wah-wah, alien-wah, mutromojo, harmonizer, looper and four flexible distortion modules including sub-octave modulation and dirty octave up.


SetBfree - DSP Tonewheel Organ


Sineshaper - A monophonic synth plugin that sends the sound from two sine oscillators through two sine waveshapers in series. You can control the vibrato, tremolo, portamento, the tuning of both oscillators, the oscillator mix, the shape amount (total and split over both shapers) and the phase of the second waveshaper function. There is also an ADSR envelope generator that can control the total shape amount and the amplification (with controllable sensitivity for both), an LFO for the total shape amount, distortion, and a feedback delay.


Yoshimi - A software synthesizer for Linux, based on ZynAddSubFX (Copyright 2002-2009 Nasca Octavian Paul) . Yoshimi delivers the same synthesizer capabilities along with very good Jack and Alsa midi/audio functionality on Linux

Arpage - MIDI Arpeggiator w/ JACK Tempo Sync.


MusE - MusE is a MIDI/Audio sequencer with recording and editing capabilities written originally by Werner Schweer now developed and maintained by the MusE development team. MusE aims to be a complete multitrack virtual studio for Linux, it is published under the GNU General Public License.


Patchage - Patchage is a modular patch bay for audio and MIDI systems based on Jack and Alsa.


  • Free Audio Sound Editor Software

Audacity - Audio editor for recording, slicing, and mixing audio.


Kwave - With Kwave you can record, play back, import and edit many sorts of audio files including multi-channel files. Kwave includes some plugins to transform audio files in several ways and presents a graphical view with a complete zoom- and scroll capability.


Rezound – ReZound aims to be a stable, open source, and graphical audio file editor primarily for but not limited to the Linux operating system.


Sweep - Sweep is an audio editor and live playback tool for GNU/Linux, BSD and compatible systems. It supports many music and voice formats including WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, Speex and MP3, with multichannel editing and LADSPA effects plugins.


Wavesurfer - WaveSurfer is an open source tool for sound visualization and manipulation. Typical applications are speech/sound analysis and sound annotation/transcription. WaveSurfer may be extended by plug-ins as well as embedded in other applications.


  • Free Audio DAW and Tracker Software

Ardour - Ardour is a hard disk recorder and digital audio workstation application. Its primary author is Paul Davis, who is also responsible for the JACK Audio Connection Kit. Ardour’s intention is to provide digital audio workstation software suitable for professional use.


Jokosher - Jokosher is a simple yet powerful multi-track studio. With it you can create and record music, podcasts and more, all from an integrated simple environment.


Lmms - LMMS is a free cross-platform alternative to commercial programs like FL Studio®, which allow you to produce music with your computer. This includes the creation of melodies and beats, the synthesis and mixing of sounds, and arranging of samples. You can have fun with your MIDI-keyboard and much more; all in a user-friendly and modern interface.


Rosegarden - Rosegarden is a well-rounded audio and MIDI sequencer, score editor, and general-purpose music composition and editing environment.


Traverso - Is an audio recording and editing program which is very well suited to record a single voice, a band, an ensemble, a whole orchestra or any other source of music.


Wired - Wired aims to be a professional music production and creation software running on the Linux operating system. It brings musicians a complete studio environment to compose and record music without requiring expensive hardware.


  • Free CAD Software

FreeCAD - FreeCAD is a parametric 3D modeler. Parametric modeling allows you to easily modify your design by going back into your model history and changing its parameters. FreeCAD is open source (LGPL license) and completely modular, allowing for very advanced extension and customization. FreeCAD is multiplatfom, and reads and writes many open file formats such as STEP, IGES, STL and others.


LibreCAD - LibreCAD is a fully comprehensive 2D CAD application that you can download and install for free.


  • Free DVD Mastering Software

Bombono DVD - Bombono DVD is a DVD authoring program for personal computers. It is made easy to use and has nice and clean GUI (Gtk).


KMediaFactory - KMediaFactory is easy to use template based dvd authoring tool. You can quickly create DVD menus for home videos and TV recordings in three simple steps.


Mistelix - Mistelix is an open source DVD authoring application with also Theora slideshow creation capabilities for GNU/Linux systems.


  • Free Font Software

 FontForge - An outline font editor that lets you create your own postscript, truetype, opentype, cid-keyed, multi-master, cff, svg and bitmap (bdf, FON, NFNT) fonts, or edit existing ones. Also lets you convert one format to another. FontForge has support for many macintosh font formats.


FontMatrix - Fontmatrix is a free/libre font explorer for Linux, Windows and Mac.


  • Free Fractals Software

Fractalnow - FractalNow provides users with tools to generate pictures of various types of fractals quickly and easily.


Fraqtive - Fraqtive is an open source, multi-platform generator of the Mandelbrot family fractals. It uses very fast algorithms supporting SSE2 and multi-core processors. It generates high quality anti-aliased images and renders 3D scenes using OpenGL. It allows real-time navigation and dynamic generation of the Julia fractal preview.


Mandelburber - Mandelbulber is an experimental application that helps to make rendering 3D Mandelbrot fractals much more accessible. A few of the supported 3D fractals:Mandelbulb, Mandelbox, BulbBox, JuliaBulb, Menger Sponge, Quaternion, Trigonometric, Hypercomplex, and Iterated Function Systems (IFS). All of these can be combined into infinite variations with the ability to hybridize different formulas together.


  • Free Image and Picture Editing Software

GIMP - GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.


Krita - Krita is a KDE program for sketching and painting, offering an end–to–end solution for creating digital painting files from scratch by masters. Fields of painting that Krita explicitly supports are concept art, creation of comics and textures for rendering. Modelled on existing real-world painting materials and workflows, Krita supports creative working by getting out of the way and with a snappy response.


Pinta – Pinta is a free, open source drawing/editing program modeled after Paint.NET. Its goal is to provide users with a simple yet powerful way to draw and manipulate images on Linux.


  • Free Image and Picture Viewer Software

ImgSeek - imgSeek is a collection of free open source projects for searching a collection of images using visual similarity. The image you are looking for can be expressed either as a rough painted sketch or as another image you supply.


Fotowall - FotoWall is a wallpaper generator rendering some of your favorite pictures in a nice and smooth high resolution composition.


  • Free Image Synthesis Software

Evolvotron - Evolvotron is an interactive “generative art” application for Linux to evolve images/textures/patterns/animations through an iterative process of random mutation and user-selection driven evolution. (This process is also often referred to as “evolutionary art” or “genetic art”.) If you like lava lamps, and still think the Mandelbrot set is cool, this could be the software for you.


JavaMorph - Here You can download a grahpical morphing program. The method is also known from the film industry. Just take two pictures and mark exponent points within them. Run the program then obtain a number of merged pictures according to a sequence of merging ratios.


  • Free Optical Caracter Recognition (OCR) Software

YAGF - YAGF is a graphical interface for cuneiform and tesseract text recognition tools on the Linux platform. With YAGF you can scan images via XSane, import pages from PDF documents, perform images preprocessing and recognize texts using cuneiform from a single command centre. YAGF also makes it easy to scan and recognize several images sequentially.


  • Free Radio Software

Darksnow - DarkSnow is a simple GUI for darkice. DarkIce is a live audio streamer. It records audio from an audio interface (e.g. sound card), encodes it and sends it to a streaming server. DarkIce is considered stable, it has been used since fall 2000 in production 24 hours per day.


  • Free Renderer Software

Aqsys - Open source 3D rendering solution adhering to the RenderMan standard


Kerkythea - Kerkythea is a standalone rendering system that supports raytracing and Metropolis light transport, uses physically accurate materials and lighting, and is distributed as freeware. Currently, the program can be integrated with any software that can export files in obj and 3ds formats, including 3ds Max, Blender, LightWave 3D, SketchUp, Silo and Wings3D.


Sunflow - Sunflow is an open source rendering system for photo-realistic image synthesis. It is written in Java and built around a flexible ray tracing core and an extensible object-oriented design.


  • Free TV and Recording Software

TV-Maxe - TV-MAXE is an application which provides the ability to watch TV stations and listen radio via different streams, such is SopCast. Currently it has a large number of channels, both romanian and international.


VLC - VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols.


  • Free Vector Software

Delineate - Delineate is a tool for converting raster images to SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) using AutoTrace or potrace. It loads images using JIU and displays results using Batik. Input formats are JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, PNM, PBM, PGM, PPM, IFF, PCD, PSD, RAS.


Inkscape - An Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. Inkscape supports many advanced SVG features (markers, clones, alpha blending, etc.) and great care is taken in designing a streamlined interface. It is very easy to edit nodes, perform complex path operations, trace bitmaps and much more.


SK1 - SK1 is an open-source illustration program that can substitute professional proprietary software for Vector image creation. SK1 supports professional publishing features, such as multiple page document, CMYK color, separations, ICC color management and press-ready PDF output.


Xara Xtreme - Xara Xtreme for Linux is a powerful, general purpose graphics program for Unix platforms including Linux, FreeBSD and (in development) OS-X.


  • Free Video Editing Software

Avidemux - Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and powerful scripting capabilities.


Cinelerra - Cinelerra is a professional video editing and compositing software. It is designed for the GNU/Linux operating system. It is produced by Heroine Virtual, and is free software distributed under the GNU General Public License. Cinelerra also includes a video compositing engine, allowing the user to perform advanced compositing operations such as keying and mattes.


Cinepaint - CinePaint is a deep paint image retouching tool that supports higher color fidelity than ordinary painting tools. CinePaint is used to retouch feature films and in pro photography. CinePaint opens high fidelity image file formats such as DPX, 16-bit TIFF, and OpenEXR, and conventional formats like JPEG and PNG. It has a flipbook for movie playback of image sequences in RAM. It supports 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit color channels, HDR and CMS.


Jahshaka - Jahshaka is a media management and playback, compositing, editing and effects application. It is developed as an open source project under the GPL licence, and is designed to be compiled for Windows, OsX and many distributions of Linux. Jahshaka uses the openlibraries as the underlying technology that gives it most of its features and functionality.


Kdenlive - Kdenlive is an intuitive and powerful multi-track video editor, including most recent video technologies.


Lives - LiVES mixes realtime video performance and non-linear editing in one professional quality application. It will let you start editing and making video right away, without having to worry about formats, frame sizes, or framerates. It is a very flexible tool which is used by both professional VJ’s and video editors – mix and switch clips from the keyboard, use dozens of realtime effects, trim and edit your clips in the clip editor, and bring them together using the multitrack timeline. You can even record your performance in real time, and then edit it further or render it straight away.


  • Free Video Encoding and Decoding Software

Handbrake - HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder. Handbrake can process most common multimeida files and any DVD or Bluray sources that do not contain any kind of copy protection.


Mobile Media Converter - The Mobile Media Converter is a free audio and video converter for converting between popular desktop audio and video formats like MP3, Windows Media Audio (wma), Ogg Vorbis Audio (ogg), Wave Audio (wav), MPEG video, AVI, Windows Media Video (wmv), Flash Video (flv), QuickTime Video (mov) and commonly used mobile devices/phones formats like AMR audio (amr) and 3GP video. iPod/iPhone and PSP compatible MP4 video are supported. Moreover, you can remove and add new formats or devices through the internet.


Transmageddon - Transmageddon is a video transcoder for Linux and Unix systems built using GStreamer. It supports almost any format as its input and can generate a very large host of output files. The goal of the application was to help people to create the files they need to be able to play on their mobile devices and for people not hugely experienced with multimedia to generate a multimedia file without having to resort to command line tools with ungainly syntaxes.


  • Free Video Animation and Cartoon Software

Animata - Animata is an open source real-time animation software, designed to create animations, interactive background projections for concerts, theatre and dance performances.


Flash4Linux - F4L is an open source development environment like Macromedia Flash, a multi-platform format(swf/svg) widely used for web applications. its a BETA version which means no real ability to use for production.


Luciole - Luciole is a free software to capture frame dedicated to making animated films.


Synfig Studio - Synfig Studio is a free and open-source 2D animation software, designed as powerful industrial-strength solution for creating film-quality animation using a vector and bitmap artwork. It eliminates the need to create animation frame-by frame, allowing you to produce 2D animation of a higher quality with fewer people and resources.


Toonloop - Toonloop is a live stop motion animation software. It aims to show the creation process the the audience as well as the result of the creation. The frame by frame animations are made by adding frames one by one to a clip made of many frames. Clips are displayed in a never ending loop.


  • Free Video VJ Software

DelVJ - DelVJ is a live video mixer VJing program for realtime video 3D composition and algorithmic video remixing of multiple sources such as multitrack video inputs from Firewire cameras, video media files, Puredata video channels, images, and text and RSS news feeds. It can send these sources to multiple outputs such as recording to hard disk and streaming to the Internet, local net, and screens. DelVJ can be controlled through OSC, and has interfaces for the Web and GTK.


FreeJ - FreeJ is a vision mixer: an instrument for realtime video manipulation used in the fields of dance teather, veejaying, medical visualisation and TV. Its development started in 2001 and continued actively for many years.


FreeMix - freemix is a live video performance software, intended for and made by freedom loving live video artists. powered by python, gstreamer, and gtk.


Gephex - Gephex is a modular video jockey software. The base visuals can be chosen from sources like video files or cameras. Then they can be modified by filters and mixers. Each modifier has several parameters, that can be controlled by signal-generators, input devices like joysticks, sound cards, or midi-devices.


OnyxVJ - Onyx-VJ is an open source video performance tool based on ActionScript 3 language. Onyx-VJ is capable of handling five videos simultaneously and will let you add various filters to have the audio and video act in sync.


Veejay - While playing, you can record the resulting video directly to disk (video sampling), all effects are realtime and optimized for use on modern processors, Veejay likes the sound of your video’s as much as their images: sound is kept in sync ( pitched when needed –trickplay) and delivered to JACK for possible further processing.


VSXU - VSXu (VSX Ultra) is an OpenGL-based (hardware-accelerated), modular programming environment with its main purpose to visualize music and create graphic effects in real-time.
