Open Music is music that is shareable, available in “source code” form, allows derivative works and is free of cost for non-commercial use. It is the concept of “open source” computer software applied to music. All 128k mp3s are available under the “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike ” license from Creative Commons to promote these goals.
The Musikethos.org project stems from the idea of promoting the musical creations and interpretations of a group of artists intending to gain a vast and heterogeneous international audience through the free distribution of recordings not avaliable on the market. In one year of existence, users have downloaded from Musikethos.org more than 400 Gigabytes of free, legal music.
jamendo is a new model for artists to promote, publish, and be paid for their music. On jamendo, the artists distribute their music under Creative Commons licenses. In a nutshell, they allow you to download, remix and share their music freely. It’s a “Some rights reserved” agreement, perfectly suited for the new century. These new rules make jamendo able to use the new powerful means of digital distribution like Peer-to-Peer networks such as BitTorrent or eMule to legally distribute albums at near-zero cost. jamendo users can discover and share albums, but also review them or start a discussion on the forums. Albums are democratically rated based on the visitorsâ€™ reviews. If they fancy an artist they can support him by making a donation.

Opsound is a gift economy in action, an experiment in applying the model of free software to music. Musicians and sound artists are invited to add their work to the Opsound pool using a copyleft license developed by Creative Commons. Listeners are invited to download, share, remix, and reimagine. Drop by the Opshop for copyleft releases on the Opsound record label (selling free music since 2004).
Krayola Records is a record label that offers music, videos and draw-it-yourself covers. Works can be downloaded for free under Creative Commons licenses. Krayola Records music is mostly ambient, drone, but also electronica, space rock, noise… Album covers design is by Claire Moreux from Digital Baobab. Drawings can easily, and legally, be reproduced with colored pencils. To download, right click on the song or the drawing you want, then click on “download link to disk”.
